Numbers for this market
Local Website Competition Index
75.1/ 100
Place 170 out of 1,822 counties that have at least 20,000 residents, and 116 among the 400 markets on this site. Read it on a 0 to 100 scale, where higher means more small businesses for each resident and quicker change. How the score works
We measure each U.S. county-equivalent with 20,000 or more residents on the number of small local businesses, the kind that depend on a small-business website, per resident and the pace at which more are opening. King County scores 75.1, which is busier than most.
Two things stand out about King County: it is seeing permits for new homes speed up this year, and it is home to high household incomes. The tiles that follow show where each measure falls among all the other counties.
The bars show where King County falls among all 1,822 counties of 20,000 or more people. Built from: the Census Bureau's population estimates, County Business Patterns (2017 and 2022), SAIPE income estimates and building permit data.
Who lives where
These are the biggest places in King County, ranked by residents. A custom website can include a page for any of them, written for the people who live there. When you evaluate a web design company in King County, ask whether each town gets its own page.
| Town or city | Population (2023 estimate) | Slice of county residents |
|---|---|---|
| Seattle | 755,078 | 33% |
| Bellevue | 151,574 | 7% |
| Kent | 133,378 | 6% |
| Renton | 104,491 | 5% |
| Federal Way | 97,701 | 4% |
| Kirkland | 91,194 | 4% |

Market profile
This year's building pace in King County points up: +75.5% in housing permits over the first eight months (7,409 units against 4,222), ahead of 90% of counties. For contractors, installers, agents and similar businesses, a site refresh timed to that turn can be done before the busy stretch, not during it.
Home to 2,271,380 residents (number 12 of 3,143 U.S. counties), King County is up 0.1% since the 2020 Census.
No single place dominates King County: the largest, Seattle, accounts for roughly 33% of residents, and the list continues with Bellevue (151,574), Kent (133,378), Renton (104,491) and Federal Way (97,701). Each town is a separate set of customers a site can speak to directly.
The housing pipeline
Building permits issued for housing units. Source: Census Bureau permit files by county. Permits are approvals, not finished homes.
Permits in King County peaked at 19,549 units in 2021; 2025 brought 8,453, about 57% less. Even so, 2025 equals 37.2 units per 10,000 residents, a higher rate than 62% of counties. Eight months into 2026, 7,409 units have been permitted, compared with 4,222 over the same eight months of 2025 (+75.5%).
Among construction-linked business types, real estate agents and brokers (4.1x typical) and roofing contractors (2.9x typical) carry the most small-business competition in King County. New households look up local services from their phones, so a site that is live and plain before they arrive meets them first, and a refresh is easier to schedule in a slow season than a busy one.
The field you would join
Small shops are the ones most likely to run on a modest website. The rows below show how thick they are on the ground in King County, category by category, next to the typical U.S. county. Those are the lookalike sites a visitor sees if you launch website design for King County businesses.
Crowding is locations with fewer than 10 employees per 10,000 residents, divided by the same figure for the median U.S. county of at least 20,000 residents. On the bars, 1.0x is the typical county. County Business Patterns establishments for 2017 and 2022; they say nothing about websites. See the method
Of the fifteen categories, the real estate agents and brokers category is the most crowded with small businesses in King County, at 4.1x the typical county (2,182 of 2,280 locations have fewer than ten employees, up 41.9% since 2017). Also denser than usual: roofing contractors (155 small locations, 2.9x) and dentists (1,040 small locations, 2.6x). At the other end, the plumbing, heating and air-conditioning contractors category sits below typical density at 0.6x, so a new website there faces fewer lookalikes.
That same category is also adding locations fastest (up 41.9%), so its field is still filling in. Established players cluster in full-service restaurants: 719 of 2,613 locations (28%) employ 20 or more people, generally the ones with bigger budgets and bigger sites.
One caution: these are counts of businesses, not websites. We do not know which locations have a site, how good it is or how many people visit it, and we do not guess; the table shows how many small rivals share the market, not what any site will earn.
Look-alike markets
King County has six near-twins among our 400 markets. We picked them by weighing population, income, how thickly small operators sit, how many employers have 20 or more staff, how many places there are and how much is being built.
| Place | Score | Population | Population trend since 2020 | Employer locations since 2017 | Small employers per 10,000 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| King County, WA (this page) | 75.1 | 2,271,380 | +0.1% | +1.8% | 54.7 |
| San Diego County, CA | 88 | 3,269,973 | -0.9% | +9.1% | 53.5 |
| Orange County, CA | 89.6 | 3,135,755 | -1.6% | +9.6% | 64.5 |
| Middlesex County, MA | 66.4 | 1,623,952 | -0.5% | -0.4% | 48.7 |
| Fairfield County, CT | 68.6 | 959,768 | +0.2% | -1.1% | 54.1 |
| Santa Clara County, CA | 67.5 | 1,877,592 | -3% | +0.3% | 47.8 |
| Montgomery County, PA | 72.2 | 868,742 | +1.4% | +2% | 56.1 |
These six were picked out of 400 markets because their size, income, small-employer density, established employers, places and construction line up most closely. Data sources match the ones above.
Closest on paper: San Diego County, CA, at 88 against King County's 75.1. The most distant of the six is Orange County, CA, at 89.6. If you are weighing King County website design, treat the table as a picture of how alike the competition is, not as a forecast for your website.
What your website has to do
The real estate agents and brokers category has the thickest small-business field in King County, so the site has a specific job to do. An agent or brokerage website works best when it is organized around places, with a page for each community served, listings or ways to reach listings, and a personal introduction to the agent.
A website is also what search engines and AI tools read about your business, so we build it with tidy code, fast pages and a straightforward structure; speed, reliability and security can all affect how it performs in search. Nobody can promise a ranking.
Our process
Most websites take about four to six weeks from the initial call to launch.
We start by learning your goals, any special functionality you need and the styles you like.
Our project lead briefs the developers, then turns your discovery notes into a clear plan of action, so the build begins from a shared plan.
The developers build a first pass from the approved mockups on WordPress. Review and edits follow, then launch preparation.
The last step is a check across browsers and devices, and then the site is live. After a standalone launch you receive a training video.

Questions
It depends on scope: the number of pages, the features (bookings, forms, a store, a member area) and how much content has to be written or photographed. We do not post a flat price, so after a short call with our CEO you get a custom quote for your project. Most websites take about four to six weeks from the initial call to launch. If you choose Organic Growth Gold or Platinum, a fully managed custom website is included.
Allow roughly four to six weeks from the initial call to launch. The work runs in four stages: discovery, planning, development and launch, with a first pass you review and revisions before launch. In a field as crowded as real estate agents and brokers in King County, it is worth starting early so the new site is live before your busy season.
More than most. King County registers 75.1 on our Local Website Competition Index, ranking 170th of 1,822 counties with 20,000+ residents, and 116th among the 400 markets on this site. The real estate agents and brokers category has the most small-business competition, at 4.1 times the typical county. Most competitors are tiny: 61% of local locations have fewer than five employees. That makes a distinct, fast-to-read website matter more, not less. If you are comparing small business website design in King County, this is the market you would be joining.
The top three categories by location count in King County are full-service restaurants (2,613), real estate agents and brokers (2,280) and residential remodelers (1,632). On small-business density versus a typical county, real estate agents and brokers (4.1x) and roofing contractors (2.9x) lead. Category size counts the sites yours will be viewed beside, not how yours will fare.
Yes, you own the site, with complete access and control, so there is no renting it from us. A dedicated project lead and developers stay with you from the opening call through launch, with support from a U.S.-based team once you are live.
We host on managed WordPress, with updates and monitoring. Maintenance means staying on top of WordPress, theme and plugin updates, installing security updates as soon as they are available, checking the site after routine updates, and looking over content a few times a year. Your domain name is a separate purchase, managed apart from hosting.
It lays a firmer foundation. We build sites with clean code and a structure made for SEO, and speed, reliability and security can all affect SEO. To go further, we add RankGuarantee™ local landing pages and, in Organic Growth, AI search (GEO) work. Neither a ranking nor an AI mention can be promised by anyone, and we promise neither.
Not at all. A website can be a standalone project. If you do select Organic Growth Gold or Platinum, a fully managed custom website with hosting and maintenance is included, while Silver does not include one. Plans run month to month and carry no setup fee or contract.
Absolutely. King County has 33 towns and cities above 2,500 residents, with Seattle, Bellevue, Kent, Renton and Federal Way at the top, and a custom site can hold one page per service per town. Planning, before any mockup exists, is where we fix that structure, and RankGuarantee™ landing pages can add more towns afterward.
